Default Tranny Rebuild Costs

The transmission shop in my community tells me my 2002 has numerous internbal issues and must be rebuilt, the estimate is $2,200. Does this sound like a reasonable number?

Which tranny does that truck have? If it's the 46RE (since it has a 5.9 in it) $2,200 isn't terrible. That's installed in the truck with a warranty? You could buy the whole trans for around a grand, maybe less. But if you don't have the tools and stuff to install it -

Make sure that includes a new torque converter. For $2,200 it should.

The rebuild kits for those is about $350. I wonder why they aren't just rebuilding it. If it is indeed bad.

Im in central Florida and trans shops around here - all they do is try to sell you a replacement. It's awful.

Unhappy new tranny

I think I paid around $1700 at an independent tranny place near me in SW PA. It all started because I was having a hard time pulling up out of my driveway {hill}. My fluid smelled burnt. I pulled the pan/changed the fluid/filter. There was a piece of snap ring on the magnet. I walked in their shop and said, "I changed the fluid/filter and found a piece of metal on my magnet". He said, was it a piece of snap ring? I knew it was. He brought out a new 6" snap ring and I pulled the piece of metal from my pocket and fit it right onto his. He said Dodge has since changed the design. The reason for my truck not starting out on the hill is the rubber on some small pumps degraded. I asked for all of my parts back and laid them out on my work bench. Lots of broken snap rings in the 3"/6" size, burnt plates, etc. I had 56,000 miles on my tranny, 2002.
