Here's a different question that just comes out of being curious. I've been reading a lot about 2002 4.7L engines having issues with head gaskets. I wouldn't really know if its any more or any less than any other brand, so I thought I would just come out and ask.

I'm not sure if this is more appropriate for the polling section of the forum so forgive me if I mis-post here. I am just wondering what your experiences have been.

How many miles do you have on your 3rd generation (02-08) RAM 4.7L, 2WD with no head or gasket or major engine problems?

I know this has no bearing on what mine will do, but I just want to see.

For the record, I have a 2002 RAM SLT 2WD Quadcab 4.7L with automatic. No towing (may get a pop-up soon though). I drive about 15 miles per day, a good mix of highway and city. Nothing fancy but its mine!

Thanks for your feedback!

Well I just joined, My 2002 Ram SLT 2wd 4.7L with automatic is in the shop and it looks like the head gaskets are going to be replaced. I have 122,000. I am in the same situation as you, I teach so only around 10-15 miles per day during the school year. Summer I try and take a short vacation with some miles. Probably not this year, dealer has said around $1800 to fix. I have it in shop now.

I hope my second gen 4.7L is in it for the long haul lol... I have just about 100,000 on my 2010. I put about 5k on it in the past 2 months and will do about another 5k in the next two. I haven't really had any major issues with the truck at all. Just a few minor issues (battery died saturday night and wouldn't jump) things like that.

at 115,00 have a major headgasket problem. I bought it like this a few days ago, going to attack the issue along with everything else, but paid next to nothing for the truck, well worth it!

I have an 02 4.7 with 256,000 miles on it. It's been overheated 3 time majorly. When I say that I mean pegged on hot from anywhere of 15-30 miles. No coolant at all left. After third time at 220,000 miles I was loosing antifreeze and could not get system to take full capacity. Water in oil and constantly running warmer than normal. Everything I read and everyone was telling me I was definitely gonna have to do head gaskets and studs. We'll with that many mile it meant timing chains and gears to. Not in my book though. I retorked the original head bolts drained the system and put in block sealer and now have put 35,000 miles on it and don't use a lick of antifreeze, not a drop of water in oil and haul 8,000 lb. trailers 3-4 days a week at 70 mph all day long. Only a ram can take this kind of abuse and keep on doing what it was built to do without breaking the pocket book.

My 2002 wuad cab 4x4 has 340,000+ miles on it. Needed head gaskets at 270,000 miles. I thought it was pointless with the miles on it so I went with a new jasper engine
