Default A/C Problems

I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Regular Cab with the 5.2 V8 and currently I am having trouble with my A/C. My truck blows very cold air for roughly 2-8 minutes at a time and then I will hear what sounds like a burst of air and suddenly it will blow very hot air. Occasionally the cold air will return and then switch back to hot air a short time after again. I am curious as to what could be wrong? If you guys have any ideas please throw them at me because Id like to get it fixed ASAP!

I believe on the 2nd gen Rams, the HVAC was controlled though vacuum lines. I'm guessing one of your tubes has a leak.

I may be wrong on this but I think on Gen 2 trucks the blend door's are electronic. They have accuators that change there position in air box. This sounds more like a pressure switch going bad. And the burst of air you hear is coils in dash loosing pressure and expanding. Now I'm no a/c guy. But if it works then stops at about the same time when you use it. It's a good place to start. So I would run truck on max and seek if compressor starts, make sure it doesn't stop. It should not cycle in max mode.

Now this is just principles of how it should work. Sounds like low pressure switch is going bad. That's the one that tells system there's enough pressure initial to alow compressor to start. Then when pressure gets high enough the high pressure switch takes over and cycles compressor out. Now In max mode it ignores high pressure switch and doesn't cycle out. Now if low pressure is bad it will kick out in max mode to keep from damaging compressor.

sounds like you have a vaccum leak somewhere
the actuator box on our dodge ram's are hollow, they are vaccum controlled only
I had to get under my dash and wire the positioning post in place so my a/c would blow cold air out of my vents.
before I fixed my actuator when I would turn on the a/c there would be a sound of a door slamming shut.
that was my a/c going into defrost mode, and you could feel the cold air coming out the defroster vents only.
once I wired it in place so it couldn't move my a/c is fine after I replaced some worn vaccum hoses.
I really need a new actuator box but you have to rip out the dash to replace it so I fixed it so it will work.
good luck

Is the pressure right? Is there a full charge? A low-charge can run the system like there is a "bubble" of on and off. Check system charge pressure first. Then you can see if you have a runaway vent issue. Also, some blend doors use motors controlled by the computer. I am not sure what years and models these are. But I have found on one car, that disconnecting the battery, resets that issue.
