My dad has 2-'01 Ram's that have intermittent starting problems. He turns the key, nothing. Re-tries a couple times, then it starts. It's not battery or starter. He knows someone who had the same issue. It cost them $700 at dealer to fix, but they won't tell him what it was. I saw that for some it was the starter switch or starter relay on the firewall.

i would check all ground wires for corrosion and good connection and all starting circuit grounds to frame to make sure they are metal to metal contact, found a lot of older chevs where the ground to battery was loose/corroded and had intermittent starting and finally wouldn't start at all but i always get battery ends with the solder plug that you just heat up and slide on the wires then use a dual wall heat shrink around the connection to make sure water stays out, open battery connects cause a whole world of problems. Hope this helps

I had this issue on my 95. A tap on the starter would fix it. Usually in freezing and wet weather. The cause was corrosion on the contacts in the starter solenoid, on the starter. In there is a set of copper contacts that come together when the relay extends, and this provides the power for the starter to turn. You will get the "click" but not the crank. I dis-assembled it and sanded the contacts, they were filthy and pitted. And never had another issue.
