Default K&N air intake- review- fit and finish

just purchased a 63-1561 air intake from k&n for my '13 ram 1500 hemi.
fit and finish, well not overly impressed.
The way the a/c lines run, the heat shield for the filter housing is useless. There will be a huge gap around that line, pulling hot air from the top of the engine compartment. At least the factory intake was completely sealed. The place where the stock intake takes air, the hole and the new heat shield don't line up tight there either. So even thought the new intake will deliver more air than factory intake, it will be a hell of a lot hotter than it was before.
As for sound, it's awesome. She breathes deeper now, and when you stomp on it, wwwwwoooooooooo!
As for performance, it's to be seen. I don't believe you'd be able to much tell a gain of 15 hp@ 4300. Responsiveness seems better? Maybe I'm just associating that with the new sound the hemi makes.
Overall, it's okay. I was going to buy an intake anyways. Your Experiences?

I had gone with an AFE for my 2012 I had before I bought my sport, and I was impressed with the sound...... actually after driving with it for almost a year, when I returned the truck to stock to trade up to my 2013, I found the stock system was more responsive.... this is one of those cases where I actually think the stock system is pretty good on these trucks, and sealed....

Im on the fence about grabbing one for my new truck, i've opted for exhaust, and possibly a tuner in the near future. Not sure when or If I'll buy one, but thanks for posting your results with this install.... Rep!

I don't know about KN CIA for Hemi but I bought one for an 07 Mustang gt500 that they told me was a plug and play install and compatible with the car. Put it on and it threw a lean code engine check light. Checked the install thoroughly and returned it back to stock.

This is why I just used a drop in K&N panel filter.

Years ago I had a modified 5.0 Mustang with just about every bolt on performance modification short of boost and cracking the long block (full exhaust, pullies, intake manifold, ignition, mass air, t-body, etc...). It still had the stock air clear with a K&N panel filter in it. I ran it three times in the 1/4 mile and took an average.

I then spent HOURS taking a cold air, ram air kit, ensuring that every bend and inside was smooth and without obstruction. I then added 1" thick of insulation around the whole tube and used a few rolls of electrical tape creating a nice, thick barrier around the insulation, built some ducting in the fender well and bumper, and mounted a cone filter. It was beautiful and sounded like a jet engine.

I reset the computer, let it learn for a few days and then ran it 3 more times in the 1/4 mile. The result: nothing, not a damn tenth of a second.

It's funny that big companies that make these aftermarket parts don't spend more time trying to actually improve their designs. The kit I bought, the heat shield was a two-piece, the second piece to use was a choice between a 2012 model and a 2013 model. Clearly the 2012 option looked to have better shielding due to engine compartment design, larger, full seal around top edge. For my '13, they just cut a big chunk of heat shield away! Not to mention there is no gasket between the two piece shield, with large gaps and every corner. I got all psyched thinking I was going to get a great product, instead I learned a lesson!

I tell my sons these high dollar air boxes. Are equivalent to taking a old 4 barrel carb and flipping the lid upside down. It just sounds like it's doing more.

The K&N I had on my 04 was great, sounded sweet but I found it to be too loud all the time, I was always racing to the next red light so everyone could hear it, this time around I bought an S&B sealed intake, fit and finish are very very good, best instructions out of any aftermarket or OEM part I have every dealt with, it sounds awesome when you're on it but isn't very noticeable around town, and at 1.40 something per litre (almost 6 bucks per US gallon) that is perfect!!

Thanks for the review. Good to get some info. I had replaced just the filter in my 13 and took it out and put it in my 14. I was considering getting a CAI and now I know not to bother with the K&N. I had trouble with the K&N throwing codes on the 09 Cobalt Turbo I had so I was on the fence about putting one on my Ram and now I will just stick with the drop in. Like some have said its hard to see a difference with them on a mostly stock or mildly nodded vehicle. I run a volant on my trans am and it made a difference on that but I also have full bolt one, stall, and a big cam. I can't say it would do much for my Ram aside from making it sound cool.

Exactly. I don't know of anyone with a CIA "only without a tune" that has seen any difference on a dyno.
