Ok ordered a mag 18, is this something I can do my self? Is it just bolts? No welding? Or pay the 100 to get it done

The Mufflex system is designed to be a DIY bolt-on. I've never installed one but from what I have read they are very easy. If you bought just the muffler you could always clamp it in but you will need a piece of exhaust pipe to make up for the difference in length of the mufflers. I would pay a shop to weld it in properly. Well worth the money.

Just an update to anyone following this thread:

I have put on just over 100 miles since putting the magnaflow 18 on. Drone was nothing on highway at install. Took a ride today on highway and drone has increased. Good news is if I hit the tow/haul button drone disappears completely. Keeping it off the drone is there but tolerable. Not silent but tolerable. Fortunately I do very little highway driving so not a huge factor for me. City driving definitely still quite, especially compared to the fm 40. Tone at throttle has increased to a nice smooth bite, and idle tone has slightly increased. I will update again after a few more miles. So far I am still happy I made the switch.

The 14" Magnaflow ( especially after break-in) droned way more than the Flowmaster super 44 that I use to have.

Here's a somewhat technical definition that I found online and feel is accurate.

"Exhaust drone is that which is caused by harmonics- a soundwave generated which in essence takes the exhaust sound and sends it back up the exhaust system (towards the engine) and is released or transferred into the passenger compartment."

Drone usually occurs at a very specific and narrow window of RPM and throttle position...typically while cruising on the freeway. It is generally an intrusive tone and due to it's continuous nature at a given point can become quite annoying. Some people are more sensitive to it than others.

I don't know how the MF compares to the FM but I can compare the MF 14 to the MF 22 as I have ran both. The difference in overall volume between these two mufflers is noticeable but not as significant as I would have expected. The difference in drone at freeway speeds however is an entirely different matter. I replaced the MF 14 with the MF 22 for this very reason. Even though they never complained, I felt sorry for my kids having to hear that mess in the back seat. I personally detect zero drone with the MF 22. The vast majority of MF 22 owners seem to agree although I have seen a few that said they had slight drone even with the MF 22. Once again, personal perception is at least a small factor.

I do know that whenever the day comes for ol' silver to be traded in on a new Ram, a MF 22 will be the first mod.

Just thought I share some more since this post came back up. Muffler sounds the same as the 100 mile comments above. Drone much more noticeable with all windows up. Put the window(s) down and no drone. Still waiting to jump on the highway to see if that drone has changed.

FWIW, my mpg's according to my Evic have gone up 1.5mpg since the swap.
