Default Bumpers & PlasiDip

Alright, guys. I'm ready to tackle my monster and I'm planning on dipping the bumpers, among a few other things. For the chrome, how do I prep the area so that it adheres well and looks good? I don't want to just start spraying this stuff all over my rig without a good idea of what I'm doing. Thanks.

Just a real good wash works. I would use Dawn dish soap as it will remove any wax that may be on there. The other trick is to make sure it is dry. I find that you need to use a leaf blower in all the seams to get the water out.

Another trick is to do at least 4 coats of plasti dip. Personally I usually do at least 6 coats on the bumpers.

Cool

I'll second both of those comments.
When in doubt, put another coat on. You'll thank yourself if you ever try to peel it off, as well as if you're trying to scrub bugs off or anything.
If you haven't started already, here's a couple application tips.
For your first coat, don't cover. I'm talking like 40-60% coverage, real light. Let that dry before continuing with your next coat (which I would then consider the 'first' coat). This will help with adhesion, though it's not catastrophic if you don't do so.
Don't apply too much with one coat, or you'll have runs, which are really hard to repair without starting over. Take your time and have some fun. (I'm sure the guys would suggest doing this with a beer.)

If you have any other questions be sure to ask. I-- or many others-- can walk you through how to make clean stripes or whatever you want, most likely.

Good luck!
Be sure to post pictures of what you're done!

I agree with the above. Any other prep to the bumper (such as priming, sanding, etc) is going to be permanent and that defeats one of the best features of Plasti-dip. From what I have seen, just a good clean surface works best.

I did a lot of PD on my Charger, and all of this is right on the money. Quick question. I saw some guys had PD'd their step rails. How do you not expect some of the dip to rub off when people step on them ?

I second Kelsey on seconding the other two...

We all know how to wash and tell if it needs to be washed again. Just make sure the thing is clean as a whistle and dry as a bone. As Kelsey said, the first few coats are just a hazing. Trust me when I tell you not to try and cover every spot in the first two coats. Just make sure it's covered evenly. If the portion you applying PD to is vulnerable to a beating like bumpers and wheels, I would do no less than 5 coats. Personally I would do at least 6. You can get away with 4 on emblems but wouldn't do less than 3 on anything.

Good luck!

Oh yes...beer is key to any modification
