Its been awhile since I had it, but my doc told me to take 2 tylenol and 2 ibuprofen. The tylenol kills the pain and the ibuprofen takes down the swelling. Anyway it worked for me!

I can definitely vouch that strep is one of the worst, but I absolutely refuse to gargle salt water ugh! Surprisingly, I still have my tonsils, though when I was younger, I got so many sore throats it wasn't funny. I agree, though, antibiotics, but for the pain, I strongly recommend the Chloroseptic throat spray or Ricola, those always work for me. My father-in-law would have said moonshine, but that hurts worse than the infection haha! And like GT said, definitely throw away that toothbrush!!! Good luck and hope you feel better soon!

Strep is definity a bactrium. Take your antibiotics, and take them all!

Nonprescription medications for strep throat

Nonprescription medications that relieve pain may help relieve some symptoms of strep throat, but they will not make you better any faster.
Acetaminophen will help relieve pain and reduce fever caused by strep throat. Aspirin or ibuprofen will also help. Do not give aspirin to children because it has been linked to Reye syndrome.
Anesthetic throat sprays numb the throat area to help relieve pain. Throat lozenges or drops may help relieve pain and keep the throat moist.

use at your own risk i am not a doctor this web address may help you

http://www.webmd.com/oral-health/tc/...topic-overview

The risk of Reye's syndrome is generally only for young children and it's correlated with the flu. I'm pretty sure you would be int he clear here Alex. That said, there are plenty of other nsaid pain relevers you can take (acetominophen, ibuprofen, naproxen, etc.) you can take for the pain. Children tylenol or motrin both come as a liquid. That may help since it suck to have to swallow anything when you have strep.

Hope you're feeling better.

Make sure you take the antibiotics until they are gone. Alot of people stop when they are feeling better, but it takes the full course to treat it and not create a resistant strain.

BTW-Acetomenophin isn't an NSAID, strictly an analgesic. But you are right not to risk the Reye's Syndrome. I've seen a few cases in the 80's- not pretty.

I am not a nurse, nor do I play one on tv....but I like to think I know what I am talking about. So here is my advice.....go hug your truck and think about taking her out....always makes me feel better. (for the record and knock on wood, I've never had strep)

The antibiotics will eventually kill off the strep, you've just got to find the key to taking care of the pain for a few days. I have better results when I gargle with plain old-fashioned Listerine. It tastes like crap and it burns like hell for a few minutes but if you can get around that I've found it gives pretty good relief for a few hours.
