Default Rear end hopping during quick starts

I recently bought a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab 4x4. 4.7l, 5-speed manual. I am not driving like this all the time, but if I try to start quickly my rear end hops up and down and I have to back off the throttle to continue accelerating. If I am in 1st gear and gun it, when the rpms are high the same thing happens, it's like the tires start to spin but then get traction again and the rear end starts hopping up and down. My rear tires are mostly bald, and this is all in 2wd. I have a cap on the truck, otherwise there's nothing in the back. Is something wrong or is this normal?

Sounds like good old axle wrap to me. Dealt with that a lot when I drag raced a leaf spring car. This isn't an uncommon problem but there is no factory fix for it.

Welcome to the Z! Don't forget to stop by the newbie forum to get the official welcome. Most likely scenario is axle wrap. Getting a set of traction bars will prevent this.

I've done some reading on axle wrap, that's most likely what I've got. Seems a little odd though, the truck is completely stock. I am thinking of getting some leaf spring clamps:

I had this problem in my Chevy. I put some Lakewood traction bars on and never had the problem again. The traction bars did bring a new issue though: probably half a dozen times someone on the road flagged me down to tell me that something was about to fall off of my truck. That's funny more than an issue, but speed bumps are a serious issue with traction bars!
