Default Diego Garcia anyone?

Just wondering if anyone else was as fortunate as I was to be stationed on "The Rock" as I like to call it for a few months??

Hi JaredSS, I remember "Dodge" well. That's what it was referred to in '79 when I was there. Wasn't much there at the time, portable quonset hut barracks, an air force mess hall and an outdoor movie screen. There was also crabs everywhere, I forget what they were called, seems like they had one tiny claw and one huge one. There were so many of 'em you couldn't drive from the barracks to the flight line without running over dozens of them. There were maybe 150 people total on the atoll, most of them Seabees doing construction.

We flew Navy P3's from there, I was in on monitoring the Iranian coup when the Shah was booted out. We also flew into Karachi (the armpit of the world) from there. There was enough room to park 6 or 8 aircraft, our maintenance shops was a single metal shed with a lean-to for the tow dolly and power cart.

I suppose it's changed some since then. Probably a small city by now!

Diego Garcia is not "The Rock". The Azores is "The Rock. I've been to Diego Garcia and loved it, it was beautiful there and had no resemblence to a rock.

Well Mad, didn't mean to offend you there! Yeah Silver Eagle, little bit more there now. I guess at the time I was younger and much less mature and didn't realize I was somewhere that I would never be again and somewhere that most people hadn't heard of, so unfortunately I didn't make the best of it. Now there are a couple of "restaurants" ran by the(I believe they're Filipino) contractors, a little base store, a swimming pool/small bowling alley on the Navy end and a few more people. I was a B-1 mechanic and they sent us there after the Iraq stuff started again because Oman said they didn't want any part of that, so we had to leave.

You didn't offend me, sorry if my tone sounded like you did. I was only there for 4 days to do an inspection, but I thought it was one of the most beautiful places I have been. I'm not sure I could have been there for an extended period of time though because of how small it is. You forgot about the outdoor theater...

I don't have any pics that can't be seen by "Googling" Diego Garcia images. I found it funny that people weren't supposed to know about the place, yet you can see it plain as day on Google maps
