I use a fine wool brush with windex to lubricate it.

Yah...it sucks. The best i can over you is sand the crap out of them and paint them. That or get some stainless tips.

Once the chrome starts to pit, it's all over. I always use brushed aluminum tips which won't rust and with a bit of metal polish, always clean up nice.

Turtle wax chrome polish and lots of elbow grease will clean them up if they`re not pitted.

Well if they are stainless then chances are they are not chrome plated. Most tips are made from 304SS which contains high levels of Chromium. This chromium in the stainless steel forms an oxide layer which protects the surface and produces the shine. Therefore plating with chrome would be redundant.

Cut em' off and go out and get some stainless tips, never rust again, had them on my last truck never had a problem with them, other than cutting my hand the odd time on them when washing the truck, ooops gotta pay more attention to what I'm doing down there.
