I work with body shops a lot for work and have seen it done many times. You can clear over painted or vinyl stripes. If you clear over the vinyl there will still be a slight edge, but smoother than if put over the clear coat.

OK, good info. Thanks for that. I think I'll be spraying the stripe down this week and installing the decal too. The airbrushing will wait for next month though until I can find a guy that wants to do it. Pics soon!

So I think I have a few guys narrowed down to do the airbrushing, so this month when I get back the stripe goes on then the airbrush dude comes out to do his thing. I'm excited! Here's a concept sketch I made, and I think the top won't be so slanted backwards. It's still a sketch. I'll do a better one and the stripe will be in white, not black. Hopefully if all goes well it'll be on the truck by the end of the month. Now I just need to get some better wheels.

You shouldn't have a problem, Honda has been painting clearcoat over decals on their motorcycles for over a decade.

the only thing that would worry me about clearing over a decal is, if you live in an area that has big temp changes (cold in the winter, hot in the summer)...the vinyl would expand and contract separatley from the metal, causing the clear to crack.

The reason I think they may be able to get away with it on motorcycles is that motorcylces are usually have plastic/fiberglass ferrings which may expand/contract similary to the vinyl.

But...should look good. My dad is going with a 68 Charger theme on his...since he owns one...lol
