Maybe they don't ship 5W-20 to Australia.

However, Kurtis' explanation is as good as any I've heard on the subject.

So are we to assume that according to the technical bulletin the MDS function does not work in Australia because they are not using 5w20 or can we conclude that 5w30 does not impede the MDS function. (In 2008 almost every automaker in North America switch to 5w20 to comply with Federal CAFE standard)

I've got an 07' 2500 so I don't have MDS but my oil cap still say's 5w20 on it but I always run 5w30 in it. As far as I know the only thing 5w20 does better is a little better fuel mileage but I'll stick with what I've always used except in my old chevy that I ran 10w-40 in lol. If I had mds I would probably run what they say just to be safe but then again if I had MDS I would be turning it off with a programmer anyway.

An educated guess would be that the reason 5W-30 doesn't interfere with the MDS would be in the way the PCM is programmed for the MDS. I'll be at the Chrysler training center next week for an engine performance class and I'll see if I can get an answer.

The unknown part is the effect on the engines longevity.
From my personal experience, engines that use 5W-20 show no more engine wear than the one's that have had 5W-30. ANY oil used in Chrysler engines need to meet ILSAC GF-4 standards to maintain the warranty.

I believe that its the difference between the G1 5.7 & the G2 5.7, but, i have been mistaken before

So did you learn anything at the Chrysler Training Center?

I asked the instructor about this issue be he had no definate answers either. We researched the owners manuals and service information and all we could find was 5w-20 as the approved oil with no references to 5w-30.

Too bad, I would've liked a definite answer to this debate.

Funny how this is the rule yet no one know why.
Odd!
