Default Potential New Owner

Hi guys I'm looking at getting a 2010 Laramie 4x4 Crew Cab 1500 Ram. I've never owned a Dodge before and I wanted to get your thoughts on a few things.

1. Are the any accessories/options that I should get or stay away frm?

2. How effective is the MDS and are there any problems with it? I drive about 80 miles a day so any boost in MPG would be nice.

3. What have been your impressions of the redesigned Ram in overall/long term reliability?

4. With a MSRP of about $42-43k what type of out-the-door prices have you guys seen? I'm in Alabama if you have any dealers you've had a good experience with.

Thanks

I see this is your first post, so let me take this opportunity to welcome you. You've definitely come to the right place for advice.

1) There are quite a bit of varying opinions about the MDS that I have read here. Most do NOT care for this option. There is also a lot of chatter about the 20" plastic "chrome clad" rims.

2) See number one.

3) The 2010's are flying off the lot. They seem to be highly desired. People overall are very pleased with the new Rams. (I have an 08' but have been a Mopar addict for about 15 years and have had just about every model and trim of truck Dodge offers).

4) Check Edmunds.com for "what others are paying" plus they give you invoice pricing and tell you about ALL incentives currently being offered.

But MOST IMPORTANTLY.....go to the Ram Forumz and ask the pros....lol.....YOU'RE HERE! Great job...stick around and others will chime in, promise!
See you around.

This is also my first RAM and I really like it. The power is head and shoulders above my 08 F150. Here are my thoughts.

1. I bought the 20" chrome clad wheels b/c I thought they look good. Didn't know it was some sort of chrome "hubcap" until I went to wash them. They are growing on me and Dodge says they are supposed to stand up to the elements better. That might matter if you live up North. If you are going to be towing heavy loads or close to the max I would go with the 17s b/c they allow for more weight.

The RamBox is a great option. I use it almost daily and everytime for tailgating. Holds a lot of drinks and ice and has drain plugs. If you get a crewcab then you also get a small storage area under each rear floor mat that is very handy for straps and stuff or a six pack on ice...and they lift out so cleaning is easy (I think crewcab is std on Laramie).

2. There are some complaints about the MDS but I do a little bit a hwy driving and I think it helps. One member here reported about a 2 mpg decrease after turning the MDS off with his Diablo tuner. If you are runnin in the MDS mode and go to pass it does take an extra second or so to kick out of MDS then downshift. I've found that I can manipulate the MDS with throttle position and passing is then only a downshift away. Your exhaust note is slightly different when in MDS mode if you are going aftermarket but there are a ton a videos on youtube to help you pick something out.

3. I think the fit, finish and quality is great. You get a lot more for your money compared to some other brands. Consumer reports does report that the 2wd models are slightly below avg in terms of reliability but I have a lifetime warranty so we'll see. They do report the the 4wd is avg for reliability.

4. There are some pretty good deals out there. Def shop around and get dealers to beat other dealers. Might even be worth a trip to Atlanta to a large volume dealer if the locals are dealing. My trucks MSRP was $40,700 and I got it for $27,700 after going to 6 dealers in 2 days in Houston.

Here are some threads that will help you on pricing.

I certainly cannot offer any additional advice over what the others have provided. However, I have had my truck for over a month now and I can tell you it is a beautiful truck. Lots of compliments already. I have the sport and love the interior. The ride is fantastic and there is lots of power when needed. The MDS is not an issue, kind of glad it's there for highway cruising. First long highway trip (360miles) I had 20MPG showing on the EVIC. Not bad considering it is still breaking in and it weighs in at 6,000 lbs. Bottom line, you will not be disappointed!

Got another question. What is everyone's opinion on the 5 speed tranny? It seems like many other manufacturers are using 6 speeds. How does the Ram stack up with respect to towing and interstate cruising.

Welcome to the Z... you're in the right place to find out pretty much anything about these trucks.

now as for your new question. The 5 sp tranny does the job quite well. My only complaint is that it's an "adaptable" tranny that learns your driving habits and tries to adjust for you.

Now this is not so bad if you're always driving the same way, but I tend not to. I sometimes feel that it's shifting a bit too much when I'm running around. (side note: some have said that the Tow/ Haul mode will prevent so much shifting, I haven't tried it personally).

Now to your original question. I love the 2010. I've got the Sport, as it's got the options I wanted (except for the sunroof), without having a shell out a few extra thousand to get the Laramie. If you shop around you can probably find a decent deal. don't settle for the first offer, see if you can get a bidding war of sorts started.

I believe options are a personal opinion. The MDS works for me, as I've had several trucks, but not one of them has gotten 15MPG consistently around town. I've got about 1100 miles on mine, and haven't taken it on a trip yet. I personally like the chrome clad wheels, as they're attractive and easy to clean (many folks here do not like 'em). some like nav and a fancy radio, other would rather not have a factory radio at all.... it all depends upon what you want

good luck and keep us informed

Exco
