Default Ball Hitch Drop

I have a 2010 RAM 1500, Hemi with tow package. 20" wheels. The 2" drop ball hitch I have does not have enough drop. I tow a 25" boat weighing about
8,000 pounds with the trailer. For a new ball drop hitch should I drop 4" or 51/4" or 6"? I have towed using a Class III, but thought I should get a Class IV. Your thoughts please. Thanks Ken

My trailer did not sit right either, with a 6 inch drop, I had to get an 11 inch. Its not fully 11inches because of the weight distributing hitch.

I would say get your trailer level, back your truck up, hold a stick straight across from the trailer and measure down from your hitch.. SHould get you close to what drop you need.

What he said

BTW wermbang - Nice looking unit. I have strong appreciation for a level trailer sitting properly behind a Ram!

I did the same thing. I leveled the trailer tongue, backed the truck up to the hitch and measured down from the center of the receiver hitch opening to where the ball fits into the trailer hitch. that gave me the drop needed.

As far as receiver hitch Tongue Weight (TW) and Gross Trailer Weight (GTW), here's the specs for each class:

Class I Max TW: up to 200 lbs

Class I Max GTW: up to 2,000 lbs

Class II Max TW: up to 300 lbs

Class II Max GTW: up to 3,500 lbs.

Class III Max TW: up to 500 lbs

Class II Max GTW: up to 5,000 lbs.

Class IV Max TW: up to 1,000 lbs.

Class IV Max GTW: up to 10,000 lbs.
