Default Crankcase Ventilation

I just purchased a 2000 Durango 4.7L with 150K on it. I am working through some code issues and found the passenger side crankcase ventilation just hanging with what looks like a screw-in plug in the block. Is this a problem? Should i replace both? thx much for the advice, gm.

Welcome to this Forumz gmcbride
before 1968 all engines had what is called a draft tube, it kept pressure from building up in the engine crankcase by venting the engine through a metal tube that dumped the excess pressure out below the engine, only problem was that it also dumped some oil & gas fumes into our air when the engine got older.
So smog systems were designed to still let the engine run without building up too much back pressure, that hose is part of the smog system, if its plugged off it may cause other problems, if your state is a smog law state, you will have to reconnect the hoses & run system correctly, or you can run an open hose out below the vehicle & get your under carriage oily
