Default After the Gas Milage

I have the 3.92 gears now. I have already installed a magnaflo 3" in and out, CAi and the dioblo programer. I have run all 3 canned tunes with the best pereformance on high octang setting. How bad will it effect the pulling power of my truck if I dropped to 3.22 or 3.40 gears. I am not much on hot rodding. But I will pull a light tractor some times. honest opinion worth the investment. My trucks rpm ranges about 2200 @ about 73mph. I later rode in a Z-71 offroad chevy. He was pulling like 1600 rpm for same speed and his truck got about 3 mpg better milage

Help me out making this decision

What size rims/tires do you have? If all you are trying to do is knock down your RPMs then a taller tire would help out. There are online RPM calculators that will help determine what tire or gear you can run based on your desired RPM or speed. Your 5th gear ratio is 0.67.

The next gear choice down is a 3.55 btw.

The chev is a 5.3 litre ...if not even smaller proly doesnt have 20" chromes and a lighter truck. To be honest man if you drive a hemi and have to complain about mileage this truck is not for you.

Yes you can't compare two different makes and models without giving some other information!! do you have 20" wheels? if yes the stock tire size is 33" the chevy Z-71 prob has 16" on it with like a 30" tire....that alone in rolling mass would make a huge difference in the MPG...Same with the engine size...what was it?

Also by looking in your profile you have an 08, that has MDS..did you disable it with the programmer?? not familiar with the MDS but if your cruising at 73MPH should it not be kicking in an running on 4 cylinders?

Also unless you spend all your time on the highway/freeway i dont think going to a lower gear will help you out...it will put your acceleration into the tank for a little more top end speed... between the price of gears, and all that you would probably come out losing...especially when you start towing!!

if it make you feel better i get 10.6 MPG

I'm 100% with you guys, good point Ruffian11! If you want to trade for my 3.55's I'll trade you in a heart beat! I'm really not sure it is worth the expense/effort. If you drive like a girl and keep it <70mph, you will get decent mileage. Add a cheap car to your garage if you need great mileage!
I went from 3.55's to 4.10's in my F-150 and it made 1mpg better in town, but 1mpg worse on the highway. The biggest difference was I had a lot more pulling power from 0-80mph. I honestly think you'll be upset with anything taller than 3.55's if you pull anything from time to time. Try a 34" tire and see if it helps ya any. I personally think the 3.92's are the best all around for the 4Gen Hemi's. Just my 2 cents!

Ruffian11, fyi, the MDS doesn't operate much at all unless on my truck w/ 3.55's unless your maintaining 55mph or less on a level grade and no heavy headwind. I did see 0.5mpg avg. difference on 2 tanks when I disabled it, as a test, so I can say it honestly works, though it doesn't seem to operate much.

Changing gears isnt gonna change much mileage. Just remember when you drop your rpms your working your way out of your powerband and causing your motor to work harder for the same output thus requring more gas. Dont put a bigger tire on in to change your gearing. They weight difference in the bigger/heavier tire will cause your mileage to decrease even more. As for the MDS, just shut it off, I get better mileage not running MDS highway then running it.

How did you determine that the Z71 got better mileage?
Did the owner tell you....or did you actually check and witness it yourself.?

Have to ask....I have a couple of 'non-Dodge' friends, and have heard the claims, but no one can produce the paperwork. Also, on a 3500km trip, they all got better mileage than I did, but I paid less for fuel on the trip. Guess the gas pump liked the Dodge so much, it changed it's price...just for me!
