Default VIN # location

Postes in Dealer Issues forum, but giving it a try here too...

I'm trying to find the (confidential)number on the frame on a 1998 Ram 2500. The guy at the Norwegian DMW(yes, I'm Norwegian)couldnt find the number and yanked the plates off my car and now I can't get them back, unless I come up with a number on the frame that matches the plate in the window...

Any inputs appreciated!

I see the obvious....top of dash, door jamb. Then several on the engine and transmission. None for the body.

What i really need is a number on the frame...any numbers on the body doesnt matter because its separate from frame anyway.

I've never heard of VIN numbers marked on the frame of Chrysler/Dodge vehicles and I have owned several over the years. Maybe it's there and I just never realized it. I will be watching this thread as you have peaked my curiosity.

If the DMW guy can't find the number, how could he even remotely expect you to know where it is. I would suggest he, who will have many more internal connections than you could ever hope to have, should as part of 'His Job' get the information, get you the plates back.
The number on the frame is for security reasons, is location information is not available to the average person, mainly to ensure this info doesn't become common knowledge.

Briefly - You probably can't get this info, but if your DMW gut is legit, then he can get it......or should I say.....already has this info.

Brad is right. I am looking at about 15 different areas there are VIN's for the Chrysler, Ford and GM's...they are all on the motor and Tranny...the VIN lane is the only way you will know...I know...I do VINS....they do it for a living....

Yeah, I'd wish it be that easy, but norwegian DMW guys are usually considered to be the spawn of S****. They dont do anything for help you, if YOU have a problem, YOU are expected to come up with the info/numbers/papers/whatever they need. And, yeah, they don't like american cars too hehe...at this point i'm considering just punching the number on the frame and tell the guy i found it....

i read this on another site, it may or may not be correct

Those numbers your looking for are called con numbers. "Con" stands for confidential and are not open to the public. This is for law enforcement only so car thieves can't find them, and law enforcement still has a way to identify a vehicle. The con numbers are stamped on the frame and engine and the last 6 digits are the only thing that is visible. Most vehicles are stamped on the top of the main frame of vehicle, and very difficult to find. You will need some WD-40 to clean the area, a flashlight, and might have to take the bed of the truck off to get to those numbers.

I just found another site that covers VIN # more in detail, possible locations & the reasons that they are put there
I typed into google search
confidential vin numbers on frames & scrolled down to page 3 where it reads
What's in a VIN? from Law Enforcement Technology at Officer.com
