Default Alternator problem?

hi i have a 2001 dodge ram 1500 5.2L every now and then my check gauges light chimes on and my battery gauge shoots up to pin it at 18volts and proceeds to overcharge my battery for a few minutes then goes back down but this time it stayed up there for a while so i was wondering is the alternator on the way out i've heard it could also be a voltage regulator but i can't seem to find the on any autostores website so is the regulator built into the alternator? and help would be great thanks.

Yes sir sounds like the internal regulator is gone bad . If you have a reputable rebuilder in your area , pull it off and have them test it. They could fix it or better yet sell you one of their rebuilt units . I personally don't like to buy rebuilt ones from stores . Have had alot of problems with them . But if you have to ! Don't continue to drive it , tough on the rest of the system including the computer and battery .

If its the OEM alternator from 2001, I would change the alternator due to the age. If its say 2 years old the regulator can be changed. Now if its like my Blazer alternator the regulator was like 2/3 the cost of a reman Alt. Do I chance sswapping out a regulator
and hope the thing works and lasts for a year or to....or pay 1/3 more and get a 1 yrs warranty and a new regulator.

if you've got some sort of electrical volt meter put it across the leads of the alternator while your guage is pegged out. This will tell you the true output level of your alternator.

It could be a bad volt guage in your cluster, or it could be a bunch of other things... but this will tell you if you're alternator is putting out too much juice....

ok I'll try that when driving last night i noticed when the gauge light comes on and the battery gauge shoots up my all my lights are flickering i went to turn on the high beam and my radio cut out so there seems to be some sort of voltage issue. there's also a low whining noise but it was making that with new old and new alternator so i don't think it would be the alternator bearing.

Of all the likely problems, the alternator is pretty low on the list of suspects. You're more likely to have a problem with the PCM or related charging system inputs.
