Default Real world towing

I am looking at getting a travel trailer for the family. I would like to find out what the heaviest load you have pulled and how the truck handled it. I understand GCVWR, tongue weight and all that, I am just curious how the truck handles the load when approaching the max.

I'll be pulling with 2010 1500 SLT CC 5.7 3.92 w/ OEM P265/70R17.

All ive pulled was a car hauler trailer and load about 6000 lbs pulled about 630 miles from MI to VA pulled that great 70mph up thru the mountain . I just wished I would have installed a brake controller before that trip , but will be getting one for any future trips . hope this helps I know its not maxed out but its the only Real world towing I have done .

Pulled with 2009 1500 SLT CC 5.7 3.55 w/ OEM 20's

When you go into the travel trailer store make sure you have the info on your drive train of your truck... especially the rear end ratio, if you are equipped with the towing package or not, etc

They should have a chart that will let you know the amount you can tow with your truck. I believe the '10 Ram with the 5.7L is rated at around 7000-9000 lbs dependent upon how you're equipped, and the body style you've got. (I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong)

Your truck is probably rated to tow 8500 lbs, like mine, if it has the tow package, although maybe a little higher on yours becuase you have 3:92, I am running 3:55. The thing to keep in mind, is this rating is with no cargo or other passengers in your truck, just the driver.

I tow a 5000 lbs hybrid travel trailer, and it feels just right. Enough power still to get up large grades and handle interstate driving without feeling like it's the trailer in control, not the truck. Sure the truck will handle more, but if you want a comfortable towing experience, not white knuckled, I suggest something in the 5000 - 7000 lbs range (fully load weight of the trailer, not the unloaded dry weight, watch this, trailer manufacturers like to through that number around a lot)

And DONT trust the RV dealer, tell him your tow vehicle is a hemi Ram, he will show you the biggest trailer they got on the lot, and tell you the truck can handle it no problem.

Just bought a 30 ft, 5500 lb (dry weight, expect to add 1000 lbs of stuff) travel trailer for the family. Just make sure you have trailer brakes and a weight distribution hitch and you should be fine. I've had many travel trailers in the past and try to keep a couple thousand pounds under the max towing rating to ensure a smooth, easy tow...

One thing that isn't figured into the max tow rating is wind resistance. Travel trailers have the most compared to boats, utility trailers, etc... If you get too close to the max towing capacity, you might have problems due to the wind resistance and the added weight it gives you.

If you go to http://mb-soft.com/public2/car.html, they give you the formula to figure out exactly how much weight the wind will add. For my trailer it is approximately 1190 lbs (at 60 mph)...

Happy camping!

Thanks for all the info. I knew about the wind resistance, but forgot to facture it in. I'm glad you reminded me.

I just recently finished towing a 16 foot flatbed trailer loaded down with 3 heavily modified 4wheelers, gas and gear. Trailer came out to around 5500 pounds loaded. I was cruising at 70 mph turning 1700 rpm's and getting 15.1mpg (hand calculated). That is going up and down winding and hilly roads in east Texas. I even had to pull it through creek beds to get back to our dear lease all on a muddy dirt road and the truck never seemed strained in the least. I was astounded at how well this truck tows and it still had plenty of passing power.

Hope this helps.

I pull a 2008 Keystone Hornet model 27dbs. I weighed my camper at a CAT scale last year while towing back from Ontario with my 05 ctd and my trailer weighed in at just over 9100lbs. I had to replace my truck this year and due to the extremely high costs of the CTD now I opted for the 2010 1500. The tow ratings came up for the 2010 model year so I pulled the trigger on mine. I have the 3:92 rears in this truck. I have done three short trips so far this year and am going down to NC in August so I will be able to give you a long trip report when I get back. First thing you need to know is if you have the 20" wheels...get rid of the P-rated tires if you are going to tow a heavy weight. I sold my 20" chrome clad and purchased American Racing Atlas 160 17" Wheels and put on Firestone Destination A/T e rated tires. I went with the 285/70/17 tires which puts the outside tire diameters the same size as the stock 20" wheel and tire combo that came on my truck. Second is that a weight distribution hitch is a must! Third, a good brake controller is also needed. Now as for towing this beast. While it is not a diesel it does a decent job. You will find your truck sluggish while pulling moderate to decent grades but will do it with no trouble so long as you are not in a hurry to get there and let the motor run the high rpms that it wants to run. I am averaging between 9mpg to 10.5mpg towing this kind of weight. Make sure you have it in tow/haul mode. I kept checking the EVIC to see what the trans temps and other temps were and I didn't see any alarming temps. I would not want to pull this weight with the 3:55 rears as I had these rears in my 03 Hemi and the truck was a gutless wonder pulling 8000lbs. So far I am pleased with the 2010 Hemi but am considering downsizing my camper.
