Default Hearing a Backlash Noise- 2002 Dodge Ram 1500

I have a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 (new body style) and I am having a noise coming from either the rear end or the back part of the transmission by the drive shaft. I had it into a transmission shop and they couldn't seem to pinpoint the problem. It sounds like a back lashing (loud popping) noise. It happens when you accelerate from a stop or when you slow down and the accelerate again. Its not every time but it happens quite a bit. Please help me with this problem. Has any one else had this problem and could possibly diagnose it for me. Thanks It would be greatly appreciated.

What did the shop do to find the noise?

First he went around and drove it to get the noise to happen again. He was thinking that it was in the transmission or the rear end. So he then dropped the pan and pulled the inspection cover off but couldn't find anything that looked way out of the ordinary. When it happens you can definitely tell it is coming from behind the drivers seat.

So they didn't bother to check the u-joints? I'd pull the driveshaft and then inspect the joints for binding or unusual tightness.

I have a similar issue. No popping but a whine from the rear end on decelleration. Shop says it a shim in the rear end. Not a crucial problem, just noise. With the popping, I am going to agree with Remerson, sounds like binding u joints. Good luck!

I was thinking that as well. Can you think of anything other possibilities if it would not be that that I could also look into? Thanks for all of your help. If it helps, the noise happens the most when I back up, come to a stop, then put in drive and accelerate while turning to the right. It's really weird. Thanks again!

Just got the problem fixed. That's exactly what it was. It was a rear u-joint binding up. Thanks for the info!
