I guess they decided the STOVL was more practical, not to mention it doesn't burn 1/2 it's fuel just lifting off vertically like the AV-8B does.

The Navy version, just the carrier launch/landing system on it or is there more? And did any of the versions keep the VTOL or are they all STOVL (aside from AF of course)?
I don't know that much about that plane except from what I can see about them since, I don't work on the plane. From what I can tell your right about the launching and landing system. The wings look different from the other versions other than that I'm not sure. I would think there is different avionics systems and payload requirements.

I'm curious how the RCS on the F-35 compares to the F-22 and B-2. Any idea?

Most of it is clasified, but here's what I could find... looks like it has a RCS that's larger than the Raptor. I saw a comparison that the Raptor has an RCS of a small metal marble, where the LightningII is a metal golf ball. The lack of thrust vectoring hurt the thermal seeking, but the recessed/shielded nozzle makes up for some. Can't find anthing comparing to the B-2 though.

God I can't wait to work on one of these! I'm an F-16 avionics tech for the Air Force and have got to mess with the F-22 a bit, and it is insane in that cockpit! Can't wait to get into the 35! I'm a recruiter for the next few years, and going to put the package in for either the 35 or the 22 once I finish, as long as the 22 is operational by then. Fury, are you an F-16 guy?? where at?

Navy (CV) version has larger wing area, folding wings, upward IPP exhaust and heavy duty arresting gear.

No VTOL made it, just the STOVL for the Marines and some partner countries.
