Its going to be a hard way to find anyone here really to say alot of bad about Dodge considering its a Dodge forum. But i have a few friends with that year of truck mentioned and love it. I also have a couple friends with the GMC Duramax diesel. Out of all of hem only one has had tranny problems and it wasnt the Dodge. Just info.....Only.The year you want or are considering is a great year and power train from what i hear and have read. Any trucks tranny can go. Especially buying used.Just my thoughts Man. Nothing more.

Dodge's transmissions have improved quite a bit from the 46RE that was most likely in the 95 you spoke of. I would say you are safe as far as that goes. And if I were to buy a diesel, Cummins is the only way I would ever even consider going. The Allison transmissions are great, but the Duramax doesn't have what a Cummins gives you: Power and fuel economy in a nice inline 6 package. Just my .02.

I don't own one personally, but my dad owns a '06 dodge 2500 with the 5.9 and a 6 speed tranny. He has an edge chip. The only time he ever really drives it is hauling our boat or the 36 foot camper. The truck runs perfectly on the 50 hp setting on the chip. The truck has tons of power and torque. He's never had a problem with the tranny. Not to mention, they blow black smoke like crazy when they're broken in

The allison isn't problem free either. If you find a good used and not abused truck the tranny should hold up just fine. When you want to make some mods (and the 5.9 can take them all) then you'll want to beef up the tranny and converter. I am a bit bias but I love my ATS tranny and converter. A bit pricy perhaps but you aren't going to have a problem with it. Just my humble opinion.
