Default 4.7 engine noise tapping at startup

My engine has a serious engine tapping noise when I start it up but go away in about two minutes. Even when it goes away and I rev the engine and than take my foot off the pedal it sounds like a little rattling going on. I am thinking the lash adjusters bleed down while it is sitting. I am considering replacing them and am wondering if anyone has this noise and replaced the adjusters. It did not leave the factory with this problem so something has worn. Its a 2002 with 105000 miles on it.

I would like to add that I already install a new timing chain set and when they did that job I was told that the engine was very clean up top and it appears the oil changes were kept up with. I also tried a flush with mystery oil a few times. I am the second owner and bought it from a small used car lot.

I just checked with a junk yard I have dealt with . They have 2 used engines : model year specific with a 16 tooth crankshaft tone wheel . 42,000 mile engine for $2150 . Expensive little bugger . 89,000 mile for $1850

How's the oil pressure? Sounds like the pump is not getting the oil up to the top of the engine fast enough.

Don't want to be the bearer of bad news...............but on an 05 1500 with a 4.7 I had we took the valve covers of due to the loud knocks just to have a look see. Two rockers were just lying there guess due to sludge, bad push rod etc we snapped them back in which wasn't as easy as it sounds, then I traded it in for a 2010. True story.

The reason it spit the rockers out is because you had valves sticking. The 4.7 doesn't have pushrods.

Cool

Thanks for the correction, pardon the error. Am I correct in saying the valves were sticking due to the sludge? This truck saw regular oil changes. Shortly after this it started to blow anti-freeze, turned out to not be a head gasket but warped head, as well as warped intake manifolds. Techs at Chrysler said it didn't have blue on it representing a major over heating. Just that it happened over time motor had 170,000 K 80% highway. Truck did very little work under load. Never had any issues till the big one. My guess is in the 05 the motor was simply underpowered for a full size relatively heavy unit. As well I put 275's on and in retrospect I'm sure this didn't help.
Reason I bring this up is the start of my problems seemed to be the rockers, although I don't know if the two were related I did very well on trade. And love the new Hemi, even though I had the problem still stuck by the Rams.

Sludge is the most likely culprit. Since you said the oil changes were regular, I'd suspect either the truck simply wasn't worked hard enough to burn off all the combustion by-products or possibly the brand/grade of oil may have contributed to the demise of your 4.7. I do tend to agree that the first gen 4.7 really wasn't enough motor to really motivate the Ram down the road.

The oil pressure gauge jumps right up to high as soon as it starts. When the timing chain set was done the top was spotless (stopped by that day and also seen for myself) and they also said the engine had for sure seen regular oil changes.
