Take an empty metal soup can. Glue a long but small metal (steel preferably) prong onto the bottom. Put the prong against the valve cover and your ear over the open end. It will tell you whether it's in the valve train.

Or, just go buy an automotive stethoscope which just takes all the fun out of making it. lol

Might check plug wires at night to see if they are arcing against anything.

Did you check the exhaust manifold and y-pipe for leaks? Sometimes an exhaust leak can sound like a lifter tic. Especially check the the left rear ex. manifold bolt. I've seen it alot.

The 4.7l doesn't have lifters. We have hydraulic lash adjusters. after so many miles they get dirty and they don't open properly. This causes the ticking. Well this is what ive been told. Lol! They make a solid lash adjuster and a hydraulic lash adjuster. Hydraulic ones come stock and work real well. I have a friend that purchased the solid ones and says they are a PAIN you wont like and expensive . He end up buying a new set of hydraulic ones.

I'm not saying this is your problem. Like some sayed above that it could be an exhaust leak, cheap oil, ect.

I think this is fairly normal for the 4.7. My 03 had a tick from new to 150,000 miles. It was getting a little loud at 150xxx when I sold it. I never had any motor trouble the dealer said it was pretty normal.

ya I think your right about ut being a normal thing. But It should go away after it warms up. Mine would tick when I would first start the truck but would go away in a few minutes. After 100,000 it got worse. I never did change them but I'm sure if I would have the engine would have sounded better.
