Default FYI - 2002 Mystery Bouncing \ Vibration Fixed

I had a suspension bounce\vibration problem unrelated to road surface on my 2002 4x4 1500 Quadcab. This bounce was never felt in the steering wheel either. It wasn't related to a particular speed although at times it seemed to hit a harmonic at different "sweet spots" on the speedoemeter. It was wierd that way.

First I went through all of the tire gyrations (i.e., balancing, rotating, balancing, rotating the spare around). Then I had the main rear drive shaft checked for run-out and balance. Next was a new set of tires....the two front replacements because I thought they were bad "new" tires. After all of this I still had a cyclic bounce type of vibration when drivng this truck. I took the truck a drive train specialty guy in Concord NC. He checked run out on all four wheels and the front drive shaft. He showed me an out-of-round tire on the rear. I replaced all four tires with the high-end Michelins and four shocks - still had the bounce, so I took it back to the specialty guy. While it was on the lift, I showed him some very minute movement that could be created by pushing the CV axles. The slight movement could be felt on the splined ends of both axles - but it did take significant effort to see the movement.

We agreed to order two new CV axles. Once the CV axles were installed all the bounce went away. Thank you Jesus!. The splines were worn on the old axles. At some point the seals deteriorated enough to allow some moisture in which resulted in rust in the splined areas. Eventually a minimal amount of play developed and the bounce started. This was a long, frustrating process (about a 24 month evolution) that was also expensive. I think it was about $1200 for the axles and troubleshooting. $600 for the first set of tires that really weren't ready for replacing, many trips back and forth to shops, etc. It was crazy. I was ready to get rid of the truck two or three different times.

Now my truck is finally riding smoothly again. Add on a trip to the dealer for a 150K mile tune up, change all fluids, clean injectors, replace acceleration sensor switch, to the tune of about another $1200 - really made a difference in engine performance. It's an '02 with 153K miles and I'll be driving in on for a good while longer after this "re-investment".
