Default Scraping noise in steering column

I've posted on this problem before - when I turn the steering wheel, I get a lot of scraping noise. I've been able to determine that something to do with the actual steering shaft is scraping on the metal collar that the shift lever mounts to (column shift). I've had all the shroud covers off the column and I've shot grease into the area of the shift lever collar (I guess that's what it's called) but without stopping the scraping.

A Dodge mechanic told me that the noise wasn't indicative of any serious problem, that it would just be an annoyance. But SOMETHING is causing the noise, and I want to find out what it is so I can try to address it.

I'm thinking of pulling the steering wheel and the multi-function switch housing that carries the turn signal switch and the ignition switch. This is where I'm looking for advice - is that housing removable? If it is, what is the procedure? I'm hoping at least to be able to get a better look down into the column and just maybe
figure out what's going on.

Failing that, I might just get a rebuilt steering column and install it. Anyone tell me what degree of difficulty I'm looking at? Pros/cons, etc?

Any input appreciated!!
