Default 2011 Towing; Good, Bad, and the Ugly

Sorry, I could not think of a fancy title for towing advice.

With my old automatic '99 diesel I could lock the truck into a gear to avoid slipping the tranny and building up heat. I got about 180K out of the stock tranny, and 95K out of the second one. It's on it's 3rd tranny now.

What is the best way to tow with this new transmission? I use the Tow / Haul button religiously when towing, but does the torque converter lock up in say 3rd gear using the paddle shifter? There are times when I will be pushing the 10,000 pound capacity pretty hard and I would like to know the best way to tun the tranny.

Any other tips to make this tranny last as long as the engine?

What is the life expectancy of this new tranny?

I appreciate any advice in advance.

** PS: Thank you MD for adding my user badge! You da man!

I think you hit a sunday slowdown on the board. I'm sure someone will be along either later this evening or tomorrow.

I hope you have 392 gears. If you don't, there is nothing you can do to keep the torque converter from unlocking. Pull in T/H mode and in 4th gear. This is my 1st Ram and have 355 gears. I pull about 4500 pounds. Love the Ram, hate the torque converter unlocking. This is the 1st truck I have owned where I cannot pick a gear and keep the truck from downshifting. How long it will last? Others will have to tell us. If I keep the Ram longer than 5 years, I will get a extended warrantee. The downshifting of the torque converter scares me!

why would the 3.92 gears stop the converter from unlocking but not the 3.55?

Your right, it would not. It should not unlock as much. Please excuse me. I was a little frustrated when I wrote that post. Just came back from a fishing trip, bucking a wind, and you can guess the rest. Worst of all, the Walleye did not bite!!

Why can't Dodge figure this out? Locking the TC is the only way to keep from burning up transmissions. A slipping TC generates heat like two teenagers in the back seat of a "57" Chevy. Ask me how I know.

^^^ Right on! Thats why I have a concern keeping the Ram after warranty. I would not care if the TC unlocking was not hard on the Trans. Then it would only be annoying.

I have a 09, 2500 with a Hemi 390, Auto, and 4-10 gears. My travel trailer
weighs 6100 pounds and my truck does the same as your 1500. When it drops for the third time and the RPM's go over four grand it really wakes you up. I haven't found a way around it yet. I use tow/haul when I am hooked to the trailer.
