I'm not saying they shouldn't be held accountable, just crossing my fingers for ya!
So what do they consider a safe distance?

heck if I know. I just leave enough room enough room that if a rock fell off the truck it would skip and bounce and come to a complete stop before I would even get to it (without braking). That's a lot of room. Most of the time people will pass me and tail the truck...All the better, let some other guy be my barrier.

Thanks for clearing that law up, I've never had it happen, but now if I do, I know not to take the word of somebody on it, and to press them to pay for the damages.

Our state (GA) mandates that for every 10 miles an hour you are traveling you should yield 1 car length behind the vehicle in front of you. For example, if you are traveling 50mph, than you should be 5 car lengths behind the car in front of you. Hope this helps.

a little off topic
If you ever operated a motorcycle on a road that has truckers that are hauling soil material, you can be a 1/2 mile in back of the haul truck & you still get hit by the stuff off of that truck, the soil spreads all over the highway & every other vehicles tires pick it up again & again & you get peppered

That's unfortunate. Sorry to hear it. The only thing like that, that has happened to me was an 18 wheelers tire blew out and some of it flew and nailed my truck a left a hefty little dent.
