So I've been experementing with different muffler combos trying to get the sound and performance that I'm looking for. I started with a SI/SO 14" Magnaflow with the stock pipe exiting behind the rear pass. wheel. Sound was exactly what I wanted, but the butt dyno didn't feel enough gain.
Next I tried an SI/DO Xlerator (supposed to be same as Magnaflow) with pipes going straight out the back. This produced a bit better acceleration, but brought a wall of drone from 1500-2200 RPM that was not to my liking. You couldn't tell that it was a V8!!
Now I currently have gone back to a SI/SO 14" Magnaflow with a 3" to 2.25" Y-Pipe going to dual pipes out the back. This has given me the sound I like back, but again, the performance seems to have dropped back again. It doesn't seem to have the top end power that the SI/DO had, and feels like it struggles to get up hills and such.
Hopefully some exhaust experts can chime in here.... Would a SI/DO muffler flow better than a SI/SO with Y-Pipe? Or, is my computer possibly still adjusting to this new setup? I've been running this newest setup for 5 days now. I unplugged my battery after the install to do a computer reset, and the exhaust is running in conjunction with an Airaid Intake Tube to the factory airbox with a K&N drop-in Filter.
