Default Let the Hunting Stories Begin

With deer season either open or opening soon, I thought now would a good time to start telling our hunting jokes, horror stories, and triumphs.

So, here's my horror story but also kind of funny.

While stationed in DC I lived in S. MD (Waldorf) and worked part time at a Military Surplus/sporting good store. The manager was always working deals to get customers great deals on various types of outings (fishing on the Chesapeake, hunting trips, etc).

One such deal was for access to private land for deer season opening day. It was shot-gun (slug) only as required by law. There were a dozen folks allowed on the land max. We all showed up a couple weeks prior to scout the terrain and figure out where we wanted to be come the morning of opening day.

My spot was on a knoll right at the head of a deer trail but far enough away to not be obvious.

Opening morning we all arrive at the designated entry point and nobody enters before all are accounted for. Its before dawn so it was a bit of a challenge walking in, but got to our spots ok.

Over the next hour I keep hearing noises all around me, so I'm thinking something's moving out there and I'm excited (been hunting several times in my life but never got a deer, just a turkey).

Just as dawn is starting to break I hear even more noise. As daylight lights up the area I start looking around me. Hunters EVERYWHERE and I'm in the middle. If a deer had come down the trail, I'd have been swiss cheese.

I booked out as fast as and noisily as I could and sat in my car for the rest of the day while WWIII was going on in the woods.

None of our group got a deer.

Turns out the land owner made the "special deal" with about 10 groups.

Wow, that could have turned out pretty bad. I'd have a one-on-one with that land owner and let him know what the consequenses could had been. Glad you made it out ok though.

Holy cow, how frightening! Did anyone have a "talk" with the owner?

He was told and his excuse was he told all the groups what sections they could be in and where not to go because other groups were those sections.

Everyone wanted to be on the trail though and completely ignored him.
