Default cold air intake questions

i am a bit of a diy'er and have seen some other threads detailing how to make your own cai. i have an 05 quad cab 4x4 with the 4.7. having a blown mustang i don't have this truck for a "need for speed" but am interested in doing anything i can to improve fuel economy.

my question revolves around that "box" that's attached to the intake tube that seems pointless. first and foremost, what is it's purpose? and secondly, what will i harm if i make my own like other's out of PVC or the like and replace the tubing.

i will likely keep my factory air box as i like the fact it's fender fed and there probably isn't a significant benefit to changing to a cone style filter. i'll likely slap a K&N in there and cut everything but the supports for the bottom half of the filter off lol.

The box is mainly there to keep the intake noise down. It's basically hollowed out inside & has baffles and little corridors for the air to flow around in. This box is also restrictive to the airflow going into the throttle body. If you remove you'll have to relocate the IAT sensor to the new intake tubing. There's a lot of good threads on here about DIY intakes, and there are aftermarket options as well. I personally run an Airaid Modular Intake Tube going from the Throttle Body into the Factory Airbox with a K&N drop in filter. This way, I got rid of the resonator box on top of the motor, and had a pre-drilled location to move the IAT sensor. Also, the sound & performance is more aggressive, but it still doesn't have the ROAR that a cone filter setup provides.

Hope that helps you out!

If you want to DIY you can get a rubber grommet to fit the IAT. That's what I did and it worked great. I have a thread with pics about 8 down (as of right now) on this board.
