Default 1998 Ram (Sport) RPM surge 40-60MPH

Recently my 1998 Dodge ram sport started having intermittent rpm surging.

1st time - hit some railroad track rpm surged 1000-2000K then immediatley went back to normal. It was almost like it shifted into neutral while my foot was on the gas.

2nd time - on the way into work this morning cruising about 45-50mph the rpms jumped 1000-1500 and then went back to normal.

Typically the truck is in OD when this happens. Before I start nickel and diming a fix does anyone have an idea where to start? Is the transmission bad? The dummy light is not on - so any advice would surley help. I have seen some posts about the TPS but not sure if it will fix it?

Finally - my truck only gets 10-11 piles per gallon any ideas to improve the MPG's?

Thanks for looking and any advice would be highly appreciated.

To improve MPG's do the typical mods of exhaust, intake, and tuner.

Start with the obvious. How's the fluid level and condition in the trans? Any codes in the TCM?

Update: I replaced the TPS sensor, changed the air filter and put in some injector cleaner and it runs like a brand new truck.
