Default HELP!!! it's drivin me nuts!!!

Can anyone help me? i have a 96 dodge ram 1500 4x4 with 318 5 speed, 107,000 miles. My truck runns rough each morning and while drivin it randomly misses. almost seems like a fuel problem but when it runs good it runs good, no problems. i've replaced the plugs, cap, and rotor with next to no improvement. any ideas? im gonna check the timing tonight thinking to try to eliminate that guess. any help would be greatly appriciated. it's makin me go crazy. oh also i have a squeal under hood. i put new idler pulley, and belt and now it squeals like crazy. thinking it's the ac pump. any ideas?????

Take the belt off , start it up and see if the noise is gone . If it is check all the pulleys for excessive wear . The pulleys should all have a sharp V type look to them . If their looking like a U the pulley is worn out and needs replacing . Don't forget to stop by the newbie section and introduce yourself .

Another squeal suspect is the alternator. I have come across many that had a bad front bearing and squealed like a pig, but charged the battery with no issue. Although the AC unit shouldn't be disregarded, it is not the most likely suspect.

For your rough running, I would think a little investigation into the fuel system would be in order. I am not familiar with the fuel system used with that year of truck, so can't offer any words of wisdom of where to start, but the symptoms you describe could definitely be fuel related, like fuel pressure....throttle body....bad line/hose....filter....etc.

Good luck, and keep us posted as to what you find.

belt tensioner squeal would be my first guess
look at your belts real close, for cracks & real shiny areas

Anything attached to the belt could be causing a squeal if it's failing a creating drag. In additon to what other suggested I've seen a bad water pump and a bad power steering pump cause that symptom.

for your driveability issue i would take a close look at the baffle pan gasket.....look down the throttle body and if you see oil its leaking......water pumps were known to fail on the 5.2/5.9 engines......good luck

i figured out the squeeling on my engine finnally. it's the a/c pump bearings. i cant believe another new belt but this time without a/c is almost twice the price of one that has a/c. it's almost $40.00 i figure i can live without a/c untill i save the money for a new pump. thanks for all the input guys. still have to figure out the misfire issue. some say it could be the part that connects to the down pipe on the exhaust to the intake manifold. sounds good but my truck doesn't have that part. there is a spot for it beside the distributor but it has a cover plate on it. anyone have any more ideas????
