Welcome to the Z. Any check engine light that registers a code is worth investigating and fixing.

We have a lot of forums for all kinds of topics, so you shouldn't have any problems finding a place to post questions.

We LOVE pics of Rams.

The one thing that comes to mind is that your thermostat is stuck open. If that were the case I would also expect that you are not getting any heat from the heater. That's all I can think of that would set that code, perhaps someone else will chime in with another possible cause. I would get it fixed.

Default wrong thermostat

Hi, I am in Montreal Canada and today the weather has got very cold ready for winter again.
When I started and drove off, it sounded a little louder in the exhaust than normal and it has just had a new muffler so it could not be that.
Then thermostatic fan always kicks in at start then goes away as soon as it warms a bit.
It seemed to be running ok but was slow changing into top gear and overdrive.
The temp gauge came up to less then a third of the way and after about 5 miles did not come any higher.
There seemed to bit a muffled bang under the hood I thought then the engine light came on. It was still running perfect and no other noise but the gauge was still low and we were getting very little heat from the heater and defogger.
I stopped and as luck would have it, had my engine code scanner in the truck so checked it and it came up 1281.
I cancelled the light and carried on, she ran perfect for the rest of the day.
During the summer I replaced the rad, water pump, thermo fan clutch, all hoses and thermostat but I replaced the thermostat with a 180 instead of a 195. Since then it has always run at about a third way up the gauge and no problem where before it was just under half way. It also seems to be using more gas than before to.
I think I will put a 195 back in and see what happens.
As we are getting into cold weather, I need the heater and don't want to damage my baby and cant afford to replace her at the moment.
Will keep you posted.

Purchased a 195 high flow thermostat to and was told that the computer was set in the factory to use a 195 for peek performance.
I am putting it in tomorrow so will see how it goes.

Should just be the thermostat. My old truck would throw the 1281 code whenever it dipped below 80 or so outside with the 180* thermostat when I didn't run the ac.

Never had any problems with the 195* thermostat.

Had the 195 thermostat fitted and new coolant this morning along with oil and filter.
She now runs at just below halfway and it seems smoother and more responsive. The heater is 10 times better so I am now happy again.
Time will tell on the economy so lets see how she goes.
Will keep you posted.
