I like some of these ideas and it makes sense for the Dakota aka baby Ram to get the Ram tagging I mean seriously how crappy does the new 2012 Ram Dakota sound. I would love it if they switched over the Ram100(new Dakota) Ram150(old Ram1500) Ram250 etc. etc. I think that idea would provide little to no confusion for people new to the (Dodge?) Ram trucks without losing all the ground they have gained since the 1994 redesign whats everyone else think?

Well id agree w/ ya there if it wasnt for the Dakota what are we supposed to do w/ it the name Ram dakota is awful and the article says thats the main reason they are considering this

I'd have no issues with it being called the Ram 100, kicks back to the old roots, but leave the full-size at 1500 & 2500/3500.

Good questions. Branding is always tough as they want to appeal to loyal prior owners but at the same time make it fresh and new.

Another complication is the spin off as RAM as it's own brand...guess they weren't thinking forward. I suppose they could always sell it as a Dodge and not a RAM for branding purposes.

Or they could start up a new company...."Dakota" ...

I wouldn't be to worried about it to much, they have not made a decent Dakota for almost 15 to 20 years, when i worked for the State of California, there was a time when almost all the pickups were Dodges, they made a Dakota back then that had a V-8 if i remember right, it was almost the size of a full sized truck, it looked good too. The Equipment shop liked the hell out of them, because unlike the other pickups, they didn't need hardly any repairs, just normal servicing. The 3/4 ton Dodges were always in for repairs, CalTrans uses 3/4 tons for most of the maintenance work, no matter what the brand is.
Back in 2009 a statement was made by Chrysler & i have not heard of any change as yet.
the midsize Dodge Dakota is now slated for extinction in mid-2011, according to Fred Diaz, president and CEO of Ram. But Chrysler is considering a unitized pickup — something similar in concept and construction to the Honda Ridgeline — as a potential successor to the body-on-frame Dakota for model year 2012.

I've read a few rumors saying the new dakota would be a lot like the new rango and it is a shame to see the dakota get so ugly and expensive I believe it is no longer avaliable in rc b/c it was taking to much work truck sales from the ram I loved my 4.7 4x4 kota more capable than any non fullsize fast and could squeeze in tight trails

I can't help but think of a Ram 100 as something requiring a cord to be pulled to start. ............. I think they better stick with the name Dakota and leave the name Ram alone....... like the guy said,...maybe they should play up the smaller size that was a Positive Trait in the back trails and tight places...
Use that as a selling tool where size is a factor.. cross country running,..4 wheeling,.. Baja desert flats,.. wooded areas,...Hunters,..Fisherman,..etc. just an idea.........

I still don't understand the whole "Ram" as a brand instead of a model thing. Almost no one I know even knows they aren't "Dodge" Rams anymore.
