Default Horrible Fuel Economy

Hi all, i just bought a '89 Power Ram 100 with the tbi injected 318. It has the 727 tranny (36RH), NP241 Transfer case, full tow package, and the 114L gas tank. I just filled it a couple days ago and have driven about 260kms and have gone through 3/4 of a tank... Is this normal? I've checked the computer for codes and all it comes up with is 34 and 37. I'm not worried about 34 as i dont have cruise control, but i'm not sure what "Part throttle lock/unlock solenoid driver circuit" supposed to mean. Does it have to do with the torque converter lockup feature?

If this is normal, is there anything i can do to improve on it? I've driven it like the bed has been full of eggs since i filled it and i've heard of guys with the 318 and 90L tank getting between 500 and 600kms a tank...

Thanks!

I'm sure someone whom knows better will chime in, but to my knowledge the power rams alway came with really tall gears. That will get you torque, but obviously is a drain on the tank.

That said, that does sound awfully low.

Oh ya, sorry i forgot to say that it has 3.21:1 Gearing too... according to the build sheet anyway. It's got the Chrysler 9.25" rear end and the Dana 44 front.

Thanks!

Oh... Just thought of something... Would it be possible that the cat is broken up/clogged? Is there an easy way to tell without ripping apart the exhaust?

slide under it & give the CAT a good rap on the side, does it sound like something is loose?

I tried banging on the cat, and i can't hear anything banging around... The only other thing that i can think of is maybe the injectors are a little gummed up and aren't giving a good spray? the truck hasnt been used a whole lot by the previous owners... it only has 110,000 kms on it... and it runs and drives really nice and fires right up

First gen Power Rams are pretty crappy on gas milage. I have an 85 250 with the 318 and stock two barrle carb and it gets about 8-10 mpg. The other thing is, if you have a 727, you dont have an overdrive, which means alot of towing power, but you suffer in gas usage. There's a slight power difference between your and mine, and mine has more weight, but mine sits about 250 miles before i fuel up on a quarter tank. It's just the pakage on the truck.
