Default Painting Plastics

Within the next week I will be ordering the airriad intake tube for my truck. (in my research of everyones opinions and my own Ive come the conclusion that the stock air hat/tubing is what gives bad airflow. The replacement "cai" aka ram air cone isnt really doing much w/o a proper cold air damn that would just suck when off road) any way I want to paint mine red put a nice mopar M sticker on it then clear coat over it. I have zero expericience painting plastics. Should I just sand down paint w/ paint meant for high heat put on sticker then clear coat anyone got any suggestions?

hey man from personal experience painting plastics you have to be careful how you sand it cause it can really show through all the imperfections or areas where to have dug in..... i would lightly sand it just get if cleaned and rough it up use a high grade primer two coats then use i guess a high heat paint would be a good idea but sometimes they come out very textured..... either way give it a good 3 coats of that and atleast 2 good coats of clear coat and i think you will be good.

I've had great luck with Krylon Fusion rattle can paint for under hood work I've done. I've done the engine cover, the fan shroud and, before I put my CAI on, the air intake box top and duct. No problem with heat bubbling the paint, etc. I could smell the paint "baking" the first time I drove it after painting but no damage and the slight smell went away in a day or so. I didn't sand at all but I did do a good toluene wipe down before starting. Now, saying all of that I have not gone back with a clear coat (I don't know if Krylon makes a clear coat in Fusion) so I can't offer any suggestions other than it would make for a smoother, more finished look. Mine is a very basic Mopar blue and white scheme but if you dig around the Z some there are some really nice homemade paint jobs to check out.

Good luck and let us see the finished results.

I have used adhesion promoter, then just regular spray bomb stuff and I can then get the body match stuff.
I have heard good things about the Fusion stuff.
