To keep my tranny happy and extend its life, i drive with O/D off anything below 55MPH or where there are lots of hills or lots of red lights. And while towing...Do not leave O/D on. Or you will regret it. I have over 176,000 miles on my stock trans and it shifts perfect. Also when i start slowing down (if above 55) i wait till i get down to 45 and turn o/d off.. Only mod ive done is the check valve delete. Also when i start up my truck i put it in Neutral to get the fluid pumping threw it and get it warm for atleast 3 mins.. Not sure how the newer trannies are designed but on the 46re the tranny pump does not run in Park..

The O/D Button is there for several reasons. Turn it off in city driving/while towing/in hilly area's/and while having to stop alot/= longer tranny life.

My O/D never see's below 55, i always put it in O/D myself once i get to 55...I hold it there at 55..Turn O/D on..Then i continue to accelerate.. Call be picky, but my tranny is still alive and well.

wow, these are all good question's to solve a matter I didn't realize made a big difference. I'm going to try and run with OD off cause we do mostly city driving with alot of stop&go here and see how it does on the MPG.

Default O/D issue

I recently towed a buggy across town for a friend with O/D off. Now when on the Highway (55mph+) and O/D on is causing the trans to slip and almost chip gears if this is possible. Could this be a solenoid fix? It rarely slips with O/D off.
I do not need to forget to mention the speedo does not read until i am going any speed above 20 mph. I changed a simple speed sensor and still no fix. I do not want to have to pay to rebuild the trans if something as minor as the solenoid needed to be changed instead. I do not trust any transmission shops, nor do i know anyone that works on them.

dude all you have to do is look at your tach to answer your question. drive for a bit with od off and a bit with od on. the lower your rpms stay, the better mileage youre getting if your going the same speed. its pretty simple math bro, dont make it rocket science.

Maybe simple, maybe not. A couple of different things going on here.

From what I've read here, lugging the truck at low rpms with O/D on may cause lower fuel mileage than running higher rpms with O/D off at the same speed. I guess the idea of the engine being in a better power band results in better mileage for lower speeds. Seems counterintuitive, but that's what I'm reading here.

The other point that was made was that running with O/D off at lower speeds is better for the life of the tranny. Different issue than mileage.
