keep in mind that if you want the best gas mileage & top road speed the differential ratio needs to be a low number, ie: 3.30 to 1
if you want to tow another vehicle quite a bit, you would want a slightly lower ratio for a bit more torque, losing a bit on the gas mileage, you would want a higher ratio ie: 3.73 to 1
if you need even more pulling power for even heavier items, you want to use an even lower ratio ie: 4.11 to 1
4.56 to 1 ratio is great for farm work like pulling tree stumps, but, if you were to take a road trip of 500 miles, you MAY ruin your rear end, not to mention the high revolutions that you would be turning your crankshaft!!
the others in here pretty well covered the wheel size & racing needs

500 miles will ruin your rear end with 4.56...this guy has no clue of what he speaks. if said truck had 3.73 and at 60 mph was going 1700 rpm
same truck with 4.56 would be 2600 rpm.....wow thats high!

Thread is almost hitting a year old. Did you end up getting the gears?
Tire size will determine what your rpm will be but there is no way you will be turning 2600 @ 60 with 4.56's

i am running 4.88's with 275/55/17 (28.9") tires and even i am not running that rpm @ 60.

I would have went with 4.56's cuz i will be putting on 35" tires but I read somewhere that some people have issues with harmonic resonance and such due to the 2wd having a longer drive shaft. In my opinion its well worth the money just have a reputable shop with lots of experience install them(not a dealership they dont know how to measure aftermarket).
I got my truetrac and gears from Nick at airram.com and I couldnt be happier, Nick helped me alot and really knows his stuff.
Hope this helps, everyone has something to say but first hand experience is always the best
I would like to hear more about your setup. I'm going to 4.56's and I run a 285/60/r17.. I ran the same setup on my 02 and loved it. Just curious on how its still running for you.

Well I am running 305/55 R20 on my 02 single cab with stock 3.55 gears. A change is in my future, I have done the math on 4.10 and 4.56 and I think that with my driving style and the hills in Hawaii that I am running around on that I will be going with 4.10. Should be interesting to see how it does with low horse power in these motors, has got to be better right? I went from a 3.73 to a 4.56 on my old Chevy 4X4 with 38s, it was way to drastic of a change for me even with 38s. I am sure that the 3 speed tranny and the 600 hp big block had alot to do with that tho. One thing is for sure, if you are not raceing, climbing large rocks, or going thru 6 foot deep mud holes you dont need a 4.56 gear. Might be fun though, tires and gas are not cheap. Hell I think I just talked myself back into 4.56.....lol.

It's been awhile since I saw the sticker on my 03 QC, but I could have sworn the gears it came with stock were 4.56. It has the 4.7, auto, and the 20's. It turns about 2200rpm at 70 mph, and used to get 18-20 mpg (now gets 16-18) at 205,000 miles. Every since I changed the motor, the mpg has been less. Dunno why.
