Default Passenger Airbag deactivation

My truck is regular cab and I drive with the dog from time to time I would hate to get in an accident and have the airbag hurt her worse than the collision would have. Is it possible to deactivate the passenger side airbag? I have an ST so no bells or whistles. I haven't noticed a light anywhere on the dash to indicate and no switch or other control. Is this something I would have to wire up myself?

I don't think there is any way to do it in your truck.

Any thoughts as to why they removed that feature Randy? My '98 Dakota had a switchable passenger air bag. Why doesn't my Ram?

That is an interesting question and just maybe the dealer has to do it now?

I think it's probably because of the weight sensing feature in the seats. If an insufficient amount of weight is in the seat the system won't fire the passenger side bag. I'll need to do some research to be sure though.

Oh - I'm sure you're correct. I forgot about the weight sensing feature that's popular now.

Yeah, but does the ST have a weight sensor in the seat? I don't think there is any wiring.

On other vehichles I've seen with the weight sensor there is an indication on the dash somewhere of whether or not the airbag is active at the time.

If there is a weight sensor, what is the required weight? Would be so much easier if there were just a switch.

The only problem with a switch is remembering to engage it again. The sensor in the seat works every time (whether you remember or not).

If anyone has any idea for getting parts and/or instructions for wiring up a sensor I'm all ears.

I would let the dealer mess with anything having to do with airbags. You don't want that thing going off in your face unexpectedly! Safety first!
