Default Dodge 1500 not good for towing as advertised.

I have a 2010 Ram 1500 Hemi and blew the tranny towing 6000 lbs. The truck only has 9k on it when it went three weeks ago. They rebuilt the tranny and I had to wait for parts from Detroit. The mechanic and salesman both said if I keep towing with it,its not going to last. But my argument is that Dodge advertises it can haul up to 10,450lbs. and I was only doing 6k...4k under maximum. So I requested them to get me out of the 1500 Hemi and into a Cummins 6.7 and they agree but I have to cough up $$$..is this right?? The trailer btw is a 20 foot enclosed with scaffolding inside of it. I weighed it 3 times and the numbers don't lie...it was 6k.

Here is a link to the Body Builder's guide. It shows what your truck should be able to tow based on how your truck is configured. http://www.dodge.com/bodybuilder/year.pdf

That 10,450 is an absolute max based on a specific configuration.

I think you simply had a bad transmission. I have a 2500 4x4 Hemi and I tow a 8000 pound travel trailer and have towed it around 6000 miles with no problem. My truck has 9200 miles on it now. I do believe we have the same transmission.

I agree...this is well under the max. I wonder why the dealer would say such a thing. Total BS!

You could stop by a transmission shop in your area & ask for a technician that is familiar with these transmissions what they know about towing with them, if they are not too busy, they should be able to help you

The RFE is an automatic transmission family from Chrysler. The name refers to its Rear wheel drive design and Full Electronic control system.

applications, ( looks like they have been around for a while )
545RFE
2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee (4.7L, 4.7L H.O., 5.7L Hemi)
2002-2007 Jeep Liberty (Diesel applications)
2003 Dodge Ram (3.7L, 4.7L, 5.7L Hemi)
2003 Dodge Dakota (4.7L, 4.7L H.O.)
2003- Dodge Durango (4.7L, 5.7L)
2006- Jeep Commander (4.7L, 5.7L Hemi)
