Default 4x4 not working

need advice please help. my 4x4 isnt engageing and there is a grinding sound that i think is my front diff or possibly a bad hub. its not constant and goes away if i stop or slow down to 25mph or so, the transfer case seems to shift fine there is just no power to the front wheels. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks
