Default 4wd questions

I have a 1998 1500 318, 5 speed 4x4 sport. How does dodge 4wd work? Im use to fords, but I was told that there is actually a sleeve in the front axle that will slide over and lock the front axle posi using vaccum or something along that line. The reason Im asking this is because when I put it in four wheel drive, the front end makes a clicking noise like splines arent lining up. The faster I go the faster that clicking noise is. It doesn't matter if im sitting still idling, or moving down the road with the clutch pushed in. Anyone have any ideas. I havent tried spinning the tires in four wheel drive yet as I dont wanna risk breaking anything more. This started last night when I put in 4wd to pull out of my driveway. So I have used it very minimally. Any help is greatly appreciated

Yes it is vaccum ran and the sleeve locks the passenger side axleshaft together. This is just an easy check to make sure its nothing major but maybe its not getting enough vaccum to fully move the collar over the plines...on my 98 the lines underneath the truck were all kinds of rusted and had a few holes and it would take a while to engage until i replaced them and it became instantanious. That may not fix it but it is a cheap place to start! keep us updated.

Is it clicking only when you turn or all the time?

I have the front collar slid over and locked it, by moving the shift fork over and moving the eclip. So i have eliminated the possibility of it being the that collar and associated parts.

Rootbeer-it does it all the time while in 4wd.
