Default Diesel Fuel consumption tips

I recently purchased a new 2010 Ram 2500 4x4 w/6.7L Cummins and it is an absolute pig ! Just got home from a quick trip from Winnipeg to Calgary and back (850 miles one way) and it cost abt. $700 for fuel! My "03" 5.9 does it on abt. $450-500. Are there any warranty friendly mods to improve MPG.

Ouch, the 6.7L shouldn't be that much of a pig on fuel. If you're looking to get some serious MPGs, you could look at a propane injection system. The system's seen improvements from 35MPG to 45MPG at best. If you're lookign for warranty approved stuff, then a CAI to improve inflow, a 4" DPF-back system to improve outflow. The biggest restriction is the DPF itself, and it'll take more fuel to keep it clean during the burn-offs.

I should have also posted that it only has 5000 miles or so on it so far and I have not pulled with it yet! Trip was with no load and milage on the display was around 12 mpg+ and alot around 9 or so @ -25c . All I had was a 100 U.S gallon L-shape tank in an open box , tail closed. and pushing it on hills to heat it up made an increase every time but burned alot of fuel! It would then hover at about 15 mpg and within 100 or so miles would slowly average down to 10+-1 mpg . Its a dream to drive ..............

i remember reading about it in some Cummins diesel forum

Look into the Flopro DPF delete kit, and a EGR block off. The 6.7 is a pig and thats why I got rid of my 08 along with all the other problems it had. Dodges way of keeping the turbo and DPF problems down was to add even more raw fuel to the regen cycle thus the lower fuel millage on the newer 6.7 motors. Dodge has a redesigned 6.7 coming out in late 2012-early 2013 but for now they will have to put up with the fact they have the worst rated diesel on the current market.

I would have suggested the DPF delete, but he specifically asked for warranty approved mods. If he was willing to kiss his drivetrain warranty bye bye then the DPF delete pipe with a miniMAXX tuner will get you a huge increase in MPGs.

My bad, I'm used to the dealers here not caring about the Dpf kits. In that case there are no warranty friendly mods for the 6.7 Well there is 1, you could buy one of those new 30 mpg Ford 6.7s and tow the Dodge

DPFs aren't a legal requirement in Alberta, but I'm not sure about Manitoba. The dealership could still cancel the warranty if they're removed as it takes the vehichle outside of the designed parameters (but legally, the mod would have to cause a failure before they can cancel the warranty)

Thats interesting. I just picked up a new 2010 2500 6.7 and the short trip home of 60 miles the average showed 21.7 MPG with the cruise set at 72 miles per hour.

Never heard about these being junk. Guess I should have kept my Duramax!
