When i lived out in the woods in Connecticut, we were about 9 miles from the nearest town, at least 6 miles to the nearest highway.
The farmers back then cleared the roads when they could, mostly using scoops on tractors, so needless to say, most country roads didn't get cleared much, it got packed by tractors, & regular vehicles. When the town had all the roads in town done, they would they do the country roads & by that time, it had snowed a lot more.
Every vehicle carried sand bags & chains & farm boys were always pulling someone out of the snow banks or over hills, with farm tractors & tow chains, no one had tow straps back then.

Damn, i sure miss those days
NOT!!!!

Thanks guys, very useful info. I'm looking to relocate out of Cali. as soon as possible and I want some rural, wide open spaces. I have been looking at some area in Nevada, Utah and Arizona that are part dessert but do get some snow in the winters but nothing as bad as back East. I'm willing to take a little hassle to have more freedom and money in my pocket. Lord knows I don't know any way to retire in Cali. without going into the poor house.
