Default Crazy Transmission problem!!! I'm baffled!!

My Ram has a most peculiar problem with it's transmission:

Driving with the cruise control on (and the overdrive off), travelling at 60mph, I hauled a loaded car trailer up a hill.
Suddenly the cruise kicked off and there was an adible BANG!
After that, when I stepped on the gas, I heard a sound similar to when you suck a milkshake through a straw and reach the bottom of the cup.
As well, the truck had no appreciable forward motion as I applied the pedal. I ended up stopping on the hill. I tried starting off again and found I had low gear - only - and I could VERY LIGHTLY apply the gas pedal and go forward. However, the truck would NOT upshift, and made that sucking sound (like a carb at WO). As I got to the top of the hill, I picked up speed and the truck upshifted. On a flat straight I managed to get it back up to speed....until I came to the next hill! Then it was back down to 5mph all the way up the hill.

I'm not sure myself , but the BANG doesn't sound good . I take it it's the original tranny ?

Yes it's the original transmission.
Two years ago, I had it repaired by an AAMCO Transmission shop when the third gear/reverse sprag was worn out (I think that was the problem!).
Other than that, it's worked great.

With it idling in neutral, how's the fluid level? What color is it? How does it smell?

First thing I did after it started acting strange was limp it to the closest gas station. I set the parking brake and put the transmission in neutral. I checked the fluid level, and it was right on the "hot" line. I had extra fluid onhand, but it didn't need any. And it didn't smell burned at all. Weird, huh?
The problems with the transmission are similar to how I would describe an older V8 missing it's kick-down linkage.

Unless you're comfortable tearing into a trans, it sound like trans shop time.
