Default 5-45RFE Gear Numbering

Why does Chrysler call it a 5-Speed Automatic yet number the gears:
3.00 - 1
1.67 - 2
1.50 - 3
1.00 - 4
0.75 - 5
0.67 - D (6?)

I know you only usually only go through 5-gears when accelerating but calling it a 5-Speed and numbering it differently on the readout is confusing.

PS Does anyone else have to exceed 55 mph to get the truck to upshift into high (0.67)? It will hold it once I slow back down to 55 mph but it wont upshift until roughly a registered 57 mph (4.7L 3.55 265/70R17).

If you notice, the ratio of 2 and 3 are really close to each other. I believe gear number 3 is actually the passing gear, and is only used when downshifting to pass, and then it is also used as gear number 3 in tow/haul mode, which locks out gear number 6.

i know they are close. Its just weird that they numbered them 2 and 3 when in "manumatic" mode instead of 2 and 2P (Prime). I had to figure out on my own which gears are which since Chryslers Tech Documents and the Readout dont match.

Chrysler does indeed call the additional second gear the 2 prime. What you have posted didn't come from a Chrysler service manual. The following article is copied straight from Chrysler. http://www.ramforumz.com/showthread.php?t=55657

Thats my point. Chryslers Tech Documents call them one thing and the gear position indicator on the dash calls it something else. What I posted is what the Gear Indicator reads in each gear.

3.00 - 1
1.67 - 2
1.50 - 3
1.00 - 4
0.75 - 5
0.67 - No indication (Other than the 150 rpm drop at 60 mph when you bump it out of "5" into normal Drive)

When your indicator is showing 5, you're in the 0.67 overdrive ratio. Both the second gear ratios are not use in the upshift pattern. The 2 prime is only used at speed when kicking down from the direct drive ratio. Your upshift pattern is 3.00>1.67>1.00>0.75>0.67. When downshifting the trans goes from 1.00 to 1.50.

I think that last gear shift you are referring to is actually the torque converter locking up, not an actual 6th gear.
