Default when & how much MPG change?

Hello all! I bought a new 2010 Ram 2500 last month and I love it. my question is: originally when I test drove it, the MPG's were listed at around 19 mpg's. since I bought it and have been driving it, I can only get it around 12 mpg. I know the Cummins takes around 30k miles to "break in" but is that when I am going to see my best MPG's? when can I expect it to start increasing and by how much? anything I can do to increase or help MPG without affecting warranties? (other than the obvious conservative driving style which I am not sure I can manage with the 6.7! :-) Thanks for the help!

I'm wondering if they reprogrammed your speedo for the tire size change ? I take it those aren't factory sized wheels and tires .

They actually did adjust the speedometer for the lift and I figured that into the calculations. it was only about 10% off. I have also heard that I need to tow something in the first few 1000 miles to "seat the rings" will this also help MPG and is this really necessary? The owners manual makes it sound like towing something will help you achieve your top MPG's faster, but dont indicate it is required. (I currently have nothing to tow since all my money is in the truck right now :-) some day we will have a trailer or boat.........some day

My diesel truck manuals never said anything about towing for 1,000 miles to seat the rings or that it was needed to improve mileage.

I have noted mpg improvements over time with new vehicles but the mileage amount varied.

An intake and exhaust will help that Cummins breathe a bit better and that should make it a bit more efficient. But, I think you are just gonna have to put some miles on the truck to see the improvement.

Also, don't necessarily rely on your truck's computer generated mileage results. It is an adaptive system that changes with driving conditions quite a few times within the total miles required to empty the tank. I suggest you compute your mileage the old fashioned way... miles driven divided by gallons consumed.

Thanks for the info! Yeah my owners manual didnt suggest towing during the first few 1000 miles, its just something I have heard from a few people. I havent figured the mileage by hand yet-thats a good idea. I only have 1100 miles on the truck so far but was just wondering if It is reasonable to see 8-10 mpg increases when all is said and done.
