Default Seems to be popping out of 4 Wheel Drive?

My new to me '03 seems to be going in out of four wheel drive. The shift light says it is in but who knows? Sometimes it seems to be hooked up good and drives through 15" snow no problem, then there are times like tonight at Walmart where I am just spinning my tires while some rice burner is laughing at me! I had a similar problem once with a Powerstroke, but I was able to put manual lockouts and it fixed the problem. Has anyone else had similar experiences?
